Paphos Launches Initiative to Combat Food Waste and Support Vulnerable Families
In an effort to address both food waste and food insecurity, the municipality of Paphos has introduced a pilot program aimed at redistributing surplus food to families in need. The initiative involves local businesses such as restaurants, cafés, and bakeries donating unsold food at the end of each day. In certain cases, these establishments will also prepare meals specifically for distribution to vulnerable households.
This program, unanimously approved by the Paphos municipal council in December, serves a dual purpose: reducing the environmental impact of food waste and providing assistance to those struggling to afford daily meals. The initial phase targets families already registered with the municipality's counseling center.
The initiative aligns with broader European Union efforts to minimize food waste, which include setting reduction targets and encouraging the donation of surplus food. In Cyprus, approximately 25% of purchased food is discarded, highlighting the urgency of such measures. Paphos stands as the first municipality on the island to implement this kind of surplus food redistribution scheme.
This program complements other national projects like 'Zero Food Waste Cyprus' and 'Life–Foodprint,' which focus on reducing food loss in markets and promoting sustainable consumption practices. By collaborating with local businesses and community organizations, Paphos aims to create a model that not only supports those in need but also fosters environmental responsibility.
