Cyprus and FAO Expand Partnership to Strengthen Food Security
On June 6 2025, Cyprus and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced a strategic expansion of their collaboration, targeting three critical areas: reducing food waste, improving water resource management, and enhancing overall food security.
The announcement followed an official meeting held in Nicosia between Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou and FAO Director‑General Qu Dongyu, who was on a two‑day visit to the island
During the meeting, Minister Panayiotou confirmed that technical cooperation would begin immediately, involving joint expert teams to develop and implement national strategies aimed at protecting Cyprus’s food systems from future disruptions
Key measures include initiatives to reduce food loss throughout the supply chain, optimize water efficiency in agriculture, and establish strategic reserves of animal feed and human-consumption grain—an important step toward mitigating potential shortages
Additionally, Cyprus formally expressed interest in hosting the 36th regional FAO conference in Europe, scheduled for early 2028. This bid reflects the country’s ambition to position itself as a regional leader in food security and climate resilience
This enhanced FAO partnership marks a significant advancement in Cyprus's efforts to build resilient and sustainable food systems.
