Filipino Diaspora in Cyprus Launches DigiPinoy Seminar to Boost Safe Online Spaces
Earlier today, twenty-two Filipino diaspora groups based in Nicosia came together for a community-led digital media literacy seminar titled “DigiPinoy: Safe & Ethical Social Media Use.”
This initiative aims to combat misinformation, cyberbullying, and other harmful online behavior by equipping participants with practical tools and awareness strategies.
The seminar emphasized respectful and ethical social media engagement, encouraging attendees to practice digital behaviors that reflect core Filipino values of respect and unity. Michael Glaros, one of the trainers, urged participants to pause and consider the impact of their words before posting.
Similarly, Maura De Vos, a psychology researcher, warned of the mental health dangers associated with manipulated content and emphasized the benefits of questioning sources rather than reacting emotionally
A central component of the seminar involved each participating group committing to a public pledge.
These pledges included steps like verifying information before sharing, avoiding harmful content, and fostering constructive dialogue within their online communities. The unified declaration – “We commit to shaping safer, kinder digital spaces—starting today.” – symbolized a renewed dedication to both digital responsibility and cultural integrity
Organizers noted that DigiPinoy is the first in a planned series of educational efforts aimed at empowering Filipino migrant workers (OFWs) in Cyprus. Many Filipinos working on the island face isolation due to demanding jobs and low pay.
