Banks and government offices are generally closed on a Cyprus public holiday. Shops, restaurants and attractions are different: there is no single opening rule for every business or site. You can still have an excellent day out, but anchor it with one place whose hours you know.
Visit Cyprus lists the fixed holidays as 1 and 6 January, 25 March, 1 April, 1 May, 15 August, 1 and 28 October, and 24, 25 and 26 December. Green Monday, Orthodox Good Friday, Easter Monday and Kataklysmos move each year, so use the calendar for the year of your trip. Finish essential banking, administration and special shopping on the previous working day. Then the holiday itself can be about a harbour, old town, village or coast walk, with a confirmed lunch or attraction giving the day its shape.
Holiday Dates, Shops and Bank Calendars
Retail rules need a little context. Government guidance says shops may trade on Green Monday, 25 March, 1 October and 28 October, but permission to open does not mean a particular branch will do so. The Ministry of Labour holiday-opening guidance explains that distinction.
Banks follow their own official calendar. In 2026, for example, the Central Bank list includes Orthodox Easter Tuesday on 14 April. If a transfer, cash service or appointment matters, consult the Central Bank of Cyprus 2026 bank-holiday calendar rather than assuming the visitor calendar covers every banking closure.
Museums, archaeological sites and bus operators can also issue arrangements for a particular date. For a must-see site, read that site's current hours. For a bus outing, check both the outward journey and the return on the chosen operator's timetable.
Plan an Easy Day Out on a Public Holiday
Choose one confirmed highlight and keep the rest nearby. A museum followed by lunch and an old-town walk works well; so does a village meal with a viewpoint, or a beach morning followed by a harbour stroll. This keeps the day enjoyable even if a smaller venue has reduced hours.
The Cyprus events calendar is useful close to the date, when concerts, fairs and local celebrations are actually known. Treat a livelier promenade or community event as a welcome bonus, not something every holiday guarantees.
